The ViewPoint

ViewPoint, the restaurant operated by the students of the OSU Hospitality Management Program, opened in autumn quarter of 2001. The purpose of the lab restaurant is to provide an environment from which to gain knowledge by an experience that is both useful and realistic. The restaurant is intended to provide the Hospitality Management students with an opportunity to compliment their coursework with simultaneous hands on experience. The Hospitality Management 350 class is an introductory course focused on providing students with an overview of operations. They attend two labs for 2 hours and 48 minutes each week. They are rotated through a variety of stations in the restaurant, including hosting, serving, bussing, food running, cooking, expediting, and washing dishes. The Hospitality Management 551 course is a non-paid introductory internship. During the student's second experience at the ViewPoint, the student is required to work nine hours each week in the lab. They are responsible for opening, operating, and closing each particular station within the restaurant. Their knowledge of the ViewPoint menu, policies, and operations should be complete at the end of this quarter to transition into the subsequent class. The Hospitality Management 661 class is a Special Events Planning and Management course. During this quarter, students will have an opportunity to develop their management style. They will help to open and close the restaurant, oversee operations and coach their fellow classmates. They work one six-hour shift each week as either the front - or back-of-house manager. The HM 661 students also must plan a theme week within the restaurant. They are responsible for developing and costing a menu, decorating the restaurant, and marketing and advertising for the week.
